 kyusu
(pouring a Kyusu - keep one finger on the lid)

The Kyusu is a Japanese ceramic teapot known for its unique design of spout and handle in a 90 angle. They are favored by green tea connoisseurs, and considered to be ideal for preparing sencha or gyokuro, as the tea can be poured till the last drop. The circular body allows for the full expansion of the leaves, letting the full flavor release.

The first Japanese teaware designs consisted of tea bowls and bamboo whisks - the tools needed to prepare matcha (powdered green tea). In the 1700's when loose tea began being cultivated in Japan, teapots were needed. At first yixing teapots were used, imported from China. Gradually, Japanese potters took the basic concept of the yixing (small, clay) and began making their own designs. The first teapot designs were small, round clay bowls with lids. By the late 1700's, potters had begun attaching a small handle at an angle that made it much easier to pour - the Kyushu was born.

Kyusus are made of five individual parts: the body, spout, handle, lid, and interior strainer. Since each piece is molded separately, much care has to be taken when assembling the kyusu. Technically difficult, and time-consuming, this type of craftsmanship can only be achieved by highly skilled potters.
