For U.S. consumers buying good tea is difficult, and great teas are still a rarity. Sebastian Beckwith and friends started In Pursuit of Tea in 1999 to explore remote, traditional areas of production and find the finest teas available, some of which seldom leave the country in which they are grown. The art of growing tea has developed over centuries; as with great wines it has been handed down through generations and varies according to region. Each year, we spend time in these historic tea-growing regions in order to taste that year's harvest and select the best.

Our looseleaf teas are crafted with great care, most of them still picked and processed by hand. We buy full leaf, organically grown when possible, most often from small farms or collectives.

In the late 1980s, when Sebastian Beckwith was a trekking guide in Bhutan and northern India, he first fell in love with tea. Since founding In Pursuit of Tea in 1999, he has returned to remote farms throughout Asia several times a year, tasting and selecting leaves that are served at some of the finest restaurants in the country, including New York City's Eleven Madison Park, Daniel and Gramercy Tavern. He has lectured at Columbia University with integrative health expert Dr. Andrew Weil, and has led educational seminars on tea at The French Culinary Institute, the Institute of Culinary Education, and The American Museum of Natural History.

Tea was always around the home in which Ana Dane was raised; the desire to make a gift of sencha (in the late 1990s) taste better led her to start exploring the intricacies of looseleaf teas, cup by cup. She has traveled to traditional regions of production in India, China and Taiwan, and knows that the most intoxicating scent in the world is of freshly picked Camellia sinensis leaves, slowly oxidizing in the air.

Ryan Major joined In Pursuit of Tea in 2012. A lifetime tea drinker, he enjoys being surrounded by tea leaves of all sorts as he directs operations from our warehouse.

Our focus is finding loose-leaf teas that are to be enjoyed for their natural flavors and aromas. We find these great teas and secure them before they are blended with inferior quality lots. The tea farmers who supply us draw from centuries of tradition to offer you a unique experience. Each tea contains, within its leaves, the promise of a new journey, full of wonder and peace.

We pack our teas in high-quality, resealable bags: these protect the leaves from degradation by light, moisture, odors and oxidation, and have a low impact on the environment. Even when properly stored, however, the freshness and flavor of good tea will naturally decrease over time (with pu-erh and other intentionally aged teas a notable exception). The best solution is to purchase fresh teas, in reasonable amounts, from a reputable tea merchant.
