Description   “Katazome-shi" literally means stencil-dyed papers in Japanese. It is also sometimes referred to as "Wazome". Katazome is a Japanese originated method of dyeing textiles with a resist paste which is applied through a paper stencil (katagami), and were used extensively on kimonos.  Katagami stencils have been used by the Japanese for over one thousand years, and were extremely time consuming to make. These elegant bold patterned papers were developed in Kyoto during the 20th century, based on traditional kimono printing techniques. Using persimmon-dyed kozo as the stencils, and aided by paste and "Kojiro" (soy bean juice), the pigments absorb deeply into the paper to produce long-lasting color and the unmistakable look of a print truly made by hand. The strength and ageless beauty of these special papers makes them great for book covers and boxes, cards, decorative elements on paper and wood, lampshades or backgrounds for photos. Japan is credited with developing this dyeing technique to a level of unparalleled sophistication.
