Ceylon Tea Sampler: English Breakfast, High Grown and Golden Tips
  Ceylon Black Tea Sampler

This is a great introduction to the variety of teas that come from Sri Lanka (the island nation formerly known as Ceylon). Here you can try our classic single estate English Breakfast against our new, limited edition, high grown Tommagong. It has a unique, brisk character and is even enjoyed with mint as an ice tea in some Arabian countries. Additionally, we offer a small amount of Ceylon Golden Tips to round out the sampler.

    Ceylon Teas

As the weather cools, we find ourselves reaching for a stronger black tea in the morning. Somehow the strength is more necessary now than in the middle of the summer. I like to vary the teas that I drink and encourage you to do the same.

Today we offer a sampler of three teas from Sri Lanka for those who want to understand the breadth of what is produced there.

Many people order Ceylon Orange Pekoe thinking that it's a black tea with some citrus character, either added or inherent in the leaf. This is not the case, in fact the word Orange comes from the Dutch Royal House of Orange. The Dutch were some of the first Europeans to import tea and in those days, many products were initially imported for the Aristocracy ("By appointment to Her Majesty the Queen" for example) and subsequently for the well-to-do public.

Sri Lanka, or Lanka as it's known locally, is an island nation shaped like a tear drop and located just to the south of of India. This verdant island has been the site of a bloody civil war for years. In spite of this, they are one of the largest producers of Black tea in the world. They export tea to Europe and the Middle East as well as Russia and the US and many other countries. The island is blessed with a Monsoon pattern which insures that different parts of the island will always have rain and an optimal environment for growing tea. Tea is grown over a wide range of elevations which adds to the growing season in each area.

Here we offer you a chance to try three teas from Sri Lanka, a more typical medium elevation Ceylon Orange Pekoe (COP), a high-grown from Nuwara Eliya and a golden tip white tea. The high-grown is from the Tommagong Estate and reminds us of a first flush Darjeeling with much lighter floral notes than we are used to from this part of the world. The last one is a variation on the famous Ceylon "Silver Tip". The plant varietal is different and the process for drying these takes over a week from start to finish.
