Bang Laa

Sebastian recently returned from Laos where he found this unique tea. It is a specialty to the region - a village near Phongsali, Northern Laos, and has been produced for decades in a very simple, artisanal way. The leaves are picked from ancient tea trees and withered shortly. They are then rolled by hand in a wide bamboo tray after pan firing in a wok to "kill the green". Finally the leaves are steamed in a small basket over a pot of water on the fire and pressed into bamboo forms. The bamboo cylinder is removed once the tea is dried and wrapped with bamboo strings. Like a green pu-erh this tea will change over time. Each stalk weighs about 0.16 lb.

Sebastian's Choice.

Price per stalk $14.00

Description More About This Tea

In Pursuit of Tea Bang Laa Green Tea
Traveling to South East Asia
Sebastian recently returned from his trip to China, Thailand and Laos. He brought back an old favorite - a Bang Laa green tea, which he first found on a previous trip in 2000. As it was hand-carried over we have a limited quantity available.
My visit in Laos
I was invited by the government of Laos to assess what they have in terms of existing tea plants in the northern part of the country. There’s a large tea industry in the South of Laos that produces low-grade green teas, which I personally wasn't interested in. I wanted to assist the government in developing a traditional tea product that could be packaged and sold to the increasing number of tourists visiting the country. Nowadays the local people who live by these old tea plants are dependent on Chinese traders who sometimes come and buy the roughly processed 'maocha' or green tea. These communities will become more self-sufficient if they have tea product suitable to sell to tourists.
The tea plants in Laos are of the large leaf assamica varietal. These very jungles are where the tea plant originated.
Unique processing
Bang Laa has been produced in a little village outside of Phongsali for generations in a very simple, artisanal way.
After picking the leaves from the ancient tea trees they are withered shortly and then pan fried in a wok to "kill the green". The leaves are then rolled by hand in a wide bamboo tray and finished by sun-drying. Afterward, the tea is steamed in a smaller basket over a pot of water on the fire and pressed into bamboo forms. When the leaves are dry, the bamboo cylinder is removed and the tea is wrapped with bamboo strings.

Brewing Notes
In Laos this tea is prepared in a big pot without a strainer basket. More water is added if the taste gets stronger. We suggest using a yixing or gaiwan to control the infusion accurately but preparation in a teapot with strainer works as well.
  • Start with your favorite spring or filtered water. Heat to just under a boil.
  • Break off about a tablespoon in volume for a 6 oz serving.
  • Rinse the leaves once, then steep for 2-3 minutes. Remove the leaves when ready. (Rely on taste, not color.) Re-steep to make another cup! Use a large enough strainer basket to allow the leaves to open and release their flavor. Get to know the tea by playing with the amount of tea, water temperature and steeping time.
  • Try it 'gung-fu' style - use a small clay pot and lots of leaf for multiple infusions.
